You saved an image, opened it, and it's soft and pixelated. Frustrating — but the cause is almost always the same, and once you understand it, it's easy to avoid.
The number one reason: you saved the thumbnail
Web pages routinely display a small, downscaled copy of an image to load faster, while the full-resolution original lives elsewhere — in the page's srcset, behind a link, or in a lazy-load attribute. When you right-click and save, you get the small displayed copy, not the big one. Blown up on your screen, it looks blurry because it genuinely has fewer pixels than the space you're viewing it in.
The quickest way to confirm this: check the image's dimensions after saving. If it's 300×200 but you expected something print-worthy, you grabbed a thumbnail.
The second reason: CDN resizing
Many sites deliver images through a content delivery network that resizes on the fly using URL parameters. A URL ending in ?w=400 or containing -150x150 is explicitly a shrunk version. Editing or removing those parameters frequently returns the original file at full size.
How to get the sharp version
- Inspect the source. Right-click and choose "Inspect," then look at the
srcsetfor the largest width descriptor. - Try the link target. If the image is clickable, the link often points to the full-size file.
- Clean the URL. Remove obvious size parameters and reload.
- Use a tool that does this for you. Dedicated downloaders check every one of these automatically and show you each image's true resolution before you save, so you never grab a thumbnail by accident.
Seeing the resolution before you download is the single biggest time-saver. A label like 150×150 in red tells you instantly that a sharper copy is worth hunting for.
When there is no bigger version
Sometimes you do everything right and the image is still small — because the site never published anything larger. This is common with old blog posts, social avatars, and stock thumbnails. At that point, no amount of clever URL editing will help: the detail was never there to download.
